The Bee Sting is a beautifully written, tragic novel that follows the four members of an Irish family over a few months. At first it seems as though the tension flows from their failing VW dealership during a downturn in the economy; but slowly, step by step many other fissures appear.

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Many high school students in the 70s and 80s read this novel as part of the curriculum. Somehow I skated through without reading it. It is a great novel for a high school English class: It is short, has well defined characters, an unhappy ending, and very clear symbolism which can help young-ish readers understand what literature is capable of.
Pigs In Heaven by Barbara Kingsolver
Pigs in Heaven picks up a couple of years after The Bean Trees end. The novel works through the themes of motherhood and community – and their sometimes knotty conflicts between the two.
