Picture dates: July 1-2, 2022
I haven’t posted anything in almost a month. In early June I caught a bug that gave me a fever for a week. Shortly after I recovered I caught COVID and have been down for two weeks. I’m feeling much better, but have been so tired and not really motivated to write the posts I have planned.
Sitting in my office yesterday and today I noticed a rose growing on our neighbors side of the fence so I mustered energy to go out and take a couple of pictures. While I was out there I took a few more.
I chose my Sony RX100 vii camera because I’ve been mulling using it on our two big trips this summer and fall. Rather than lugging around an A7R3 or A6600 can I get decent shots with this little 1-inch sensor camera?
For this picture I used the new Adobe Lightroom Classic masking features. I used Select Subject to enhance the sharpness and of the front of the net.

Here is a picture of that same net taken last July using my Sony A6600 with a bigger sensor and a 90mm Macro lens.

This picture has much shallower depth of field; but I’d expect that from a macro lens.
Here is the rose which caught my eye outside my office window.

This afternoon I saw it again and just had to go out and grab another picture. This one from another angle with a little more context. The deer come through our neighborhood and treat the roses like a buffet. One evening a bud will just be starting to bloom and the next morning, it looks like it’s been nipped by clippers. This rose is tall enough to escape the carnage.

Sitting around watching TV last night I messed around with shooting in Manual mode. I focused on the corner lamp and locked the exposure on the lightbulbs. I like the result. The camera can do better than just snapshots.

In for a penny, in for a pound. I grabbed a flash and configured it to work in slave mode (I hate that term; but I don’t know of an alternative). [EDIT July 3, 2022: See my notes at the end of this post.] We ordered a new ottoman at Christmas and it was available this week. When I picked it up the red line on my COVID test was barely there. But we still masked up to protect ourselves and the store owner.

This morning I took another COVID test ready to declare victory; but instead got bummed out. That faint red line from Wednesday was much darker and heavier this morning. Doing some research I figure it’s either a rebound infection or just a false positive. Regardless, I’m restricting myself for the another week. My energy is coming back and I’m just rolling with it now.
I probably take more pictures of cooking than anything else. I won’t be taking pictures of my cooking on the Canada trip; but I still used the RX100 for a cooking shoot in May. You can read that here.
I’m warming up to the idea of just taking this little beauty of a camera on our train trip across Canada. It will fit easily in my travel pack and the results are plenty good enough. I’m looking forward to getting out and practicing with this camera this summer.
[EDIT July 3, 2022]
- I’ve created a Flickr photo album of 50+ photos taken with various generations of the RX100. It is a decent representation of the camera’s capabilities.
- Alternatively, you can go through the Camera Samples page on this blog on the left hand side under the logos to find sample photographs with the cameras. Or just go directly to it here.
- Frances suggested using the terms “Transmitter” and “Receiver” in place of “Master”and “Slave”. Much better. But I’m leaving the terms in this post as a flag for the improvement. You can read an article on this subject on the Petapixel site. Canon dropped the terms in 2017 and Nikon dropped the term in the early 2000s. My Godox flashes still use the term.
